Lucas Ness

Lucas Ness is HCA’s Elementary Principal and Physical Education teacher. Lucas has served in numerous academic leadership roles locally, and will receive his principal license at the end of 2024. He came highly recommended and has shown key values that make him an excellent candidate for our school’s principal, including integrity, initiative, a strong work ethic, a love for Jesus and a love for students.

Lucas is an alumni of HCA, and thrilled to be coming back to serve as the elementary school principal. He graduated from the University of Northern Colorado where he received his education degree and has been teaching and leading since. He has had the opportunity to teach in Arizona on the Navajo reservation, in Barbados where he was also the director of students, and most recently at RCS in Loveland where he taught elementary and middle school classes as well as worked in leadership and coaching roles. His wife and he are blessed with two children ages 3 and 4 as well as one on the way, and being able to have the opportunity to send them to Heritage is a prayer they have had for a long time.  In his spare time he enjoy all things outdoors including running, camping, hunting, and fishing.

She loves helping students use science to build an appreciation for the Creator God.

Valerie Brown

Valerie Brown is the Elementary Director of Instruction. She was previously one of our 3rd grade teachers. She joined the HCA team in 2019, but she has been affiliated with Heritage as both a parent and a volunteer since 2005. Mrs. Brown received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education with Fields of Specialization in both Reading and Art from Dordt College, and she is certified through the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI). Mrs. Brown’s favorite part of teaching is discovering each child’s unique potential and fostering both personal and academic growth.

Dawn Cuckler

Dawn Cuckler has been teaching and supporting Heritage math and administration since 2002. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Pensacola Christian College. She believes math is the beautiful language with which God wrote the universe, and that understanding it helps us have a deeper knowledge of our Creator and Savior. She is blessed to be able to support all that God is doing here at HCA. She and Mike have four amazing children who continue to make their mark for the Kingdom of God. Besides spending time with her family, her favorite past-time is creating complex spreadsheets.

Mrs. Smith-Bowman has a Bachelor of Arts in Business Management from George Fox University, and a Master of Education from Montana State University – Billings. Prior to becoming the Finance Director, Mrs. Smith-Bowman spent six years teaching at HCA. She taught first grade for one year, sixth grade for three years and high school English for two years, and was the Communications Manager for over a decade.

Jason Swiers

Jason Swiers is HCA’s Communications Director. Jason Swiers was a part-time paraprofessional at Heritage for 3 years. He worked with the elementary grades, pre-kindergarten through sixth grade. He has an associates degree in Air and Space Operations Technology. He grew up in northern Minnesota and moved to Colorado in 1997. He retired in 2011 from a military career, serving with both the Army National Guard in North Dakota and the Air National Guard in Colorado. He worked for PSD as a part-time and substitute paraprofessional for several years. He loves the opportunities at Heritage to use and share his faith while serving the students, families, teachers, and staff.  He desires to grow closer to Christ and His church in all areas of his life. In his free time he enjoys serving at Wellington Community Church, working on his property, fishing, and spending time with his church, school, and family.

Joe Packard

Joe Packard is HCA’s Athletic Director and one of HCA’s Bible teachers. He has been a coach and teacher since 2005. He started as the Athletic Director in 2022. He and his wife both teach at Heritage, and they have 3 boys that attend here. Joe has a degree in English Literature as well as a minor in Spanish from Western State College. He also competed in collegiate cross country and track and field. He was previously a full-time pastor at a local church for 15 years. He stepped away from this role predominantly as part of God moving him towards full-time investment at HCA. Joe coaches high school cross country, girls basketball, and track and field.

He teaches just like he coaches, with deep passion and encouragement grounded on the Truth of Jesus Christ. He insists upon excellence, evidence in growth, self sacrifice, discipline, teamwork, and unity. His classroom will be a place of peace, joy, interaction, dialogue, fun, and influence. Our bible classes will be poised to dig deep into the truths and power of Scripture but also environments of spontaneous and Spirit-led focus on how to navigate the unprecedented season of life we’ve all found ourselves in – at school, at home, in the church, and in the world.

His heart is to see our young men and women at HCA push out of the ordinary in everything they do and into the extraordinary that is everything that Jesus Christ epitomized in His life and death. Joe is committed to instruction and learning that is normal, required, expected, and necessary for furthering careers and spurring academic growth. He teaches and coaches because he hopes that in the midst of that growth and development, that an even greater, unexpected, and frankly miraculous work of God might take place in our students. His prayer is that as an outcome of their time in his classes and our school, that they might become a fragrance and being unlike anything the world has known or seen, for the glory and purposes of Our Father God.

Joe is very humbled and honored to be able to serve in the roles God has set before him. He is more aware than ever of his dependency upon Jesus and his total inability to accomplish anything apart from Him. He is so grateful to be here, to have his family here with yours, and for us to journey together in being more and more like Jesus as we strive to together obey and live out the callings of God by the very power, indwelling, and guidance of the Holy Spirit! He’s so ready to work harder than ever, to have more fun than ever, and to witness, share, and celebrate the goodness of Our Father together – every year at HCA! “Let’s BLEED GREEN, and launch wholeheartedly into every relationship and activity expecting nothing less than to marvel at what He can do!”

Maddy Givens

Maddy Givens is HCA’s Assistant Generosity Director. After graduating from HCA in ’09, Maddy moved to California to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication from Biola University. While in CA, Maddy worked for a small nonprofit that worked with marginalized groups in Orange County. In 2018, Maddy became the Development & Audience Engagement Director, quickly learning industry best practices and becoming passionate about God’s heart for both the giver AND receiver. After praying about moving for 2+ years, Maddy and her husband, James, felt the peace of the Lord in deciding to move back to Colorado to be closer to Maddy’s family. They moved in October 2023 with their dog, Poncho, and have consistently been reminded of God’s provision and faithfulness as He’s opened up doors to start a business, work at HCA, and be a bigger part of their nieces’ and nephew’s lives (current students at HCA). They’ve learned what dependence on and trust in the Lord’s plan looks like firsthand and are thankful for the story that is unfolding here.
